You are finally doing it – starting your own business, and you are scrambling to get everything in place in the beginning. One thing which it can be difficult to get your head around, is insurance. Commercial insurance is much the same as personal insurance in many way – but quite different also. Just like with your personal/private insurance policies, you pay to be protected against risk, and what you pay is caculated by your insurance company.
Same thing with commercial business insurance. You inform the insurance agent of what you do for a living, and the agent informs you back on how much it will cost you to insure your business. But businesse can be complex, meaning that the insurance can get complex as well. You need to be able to get an overview of what you need and don’t need in the start. Begin by asking yourself what you do. You want to be able to answer in detail here – like how many customers do you have, how many employees, how moneys worth of equipment, etc. You also want to learn to suspect your own ignorance a little. If you have doubts about whether or not to insure yourself against some risk – perceived or real – do something to dispel your doubts. Seek information to either confirm or defuse your worries. If you have no employees for instance, then your
commercial liability insurance needs to reflect that. If only one person really needs to drive the company car, don’t waste money on coverage for more than one driver.
In many states, the only insurance you literally need, is liability insurance. It is often mandatory, so there is no way around it. Of course, if you have a company car, you need commercial auto insurance. And if you want your company to survive longer than the first year, you will need to insure any values and assets. You don’t need every kind of insurance to have good coverage – but you do need to have the right ones.
