Frameless shower doors and screens aren’t just appealing for their modern, almost invisible look. Perhaps their best feature is their ease of cleaning. Anyone who wants to do a thorough job cleaning shower curtains or sliding shower doors needs to remove them first, but owners of frame shower doors can clean them right where they are. And since there are no corners that are hard to get at (unlike the tracks of sliding doors), most frameless screens and doors can be cleaned in just a few minutes. There are two main methods of fast cleaning, both of which are somewhat similar: with vinegar, and with cleanser.
Cleaning with Vinegar
The following method works best for shower screens, frameless hinged shower doors and frameless sliding shower doors. In a bucket filled with hot water, dip a household sponge and use the sponge to dampen the glass screen. Using a mixture of one part vinegar and one part water poured into a spray bottle, spray the dampened glass and allow the vinegar solution to sit for a minute while it’s absorbed by dirt particles, hard water deposits, soap scum, etc. Plunge the sponge back into the bucket to rinse out the vinegar, then wipe the vinegar off the screen. Dry using paper towels for faster drying than cloth towels.
Cleaning with Cleanser
For heavy duty surface cleaning–not just screens, but entire walk in shower enclosures–cleanser works best. If you’re only cleaning tiles and fixtures, power-based cleansers are fine, but for glass shower screens and doors, you’re much better of using cream cleansers, which have less chance of etching the glass.
Soak a scrub sponge in a bucket of hot water. A “scrub sponge” refers to a household sponge with two surfaces: a soft, spongy side, and a scratch-free abrasive side for scouring. Dampen the shower door (or other surface) with the soft side of the sponge, soak the sponge again, then pour some cleanser on the abrasive side. Scrub the surface to be cleaned, rinse out the sponge in the bucket, then use to damp sponge to rinse off the clean surface. Dry with paper towels, as with the first method. Even for a whole shower enclosure, you should be done in under 10 minutes.
